Predicting canopy cover of diverse forest types from individual tree measurements

چکیده

Quantifying tree canopy cover is fundamental to applications in forestry and ecology, but estimates vary substantially depending on type of field measurement, imagery, or active sensing used. Our objective was improve stand-level from standard inventory measurements, using representative data collected across diverse forest plant association groups Oregon, USA. Canopy measured with line intercept sampling 1706 plots compared calculations individually tallied trees. We investigated adjustments crown area equations, overlap factors, modeling climatic variables measurements estimate cover. Estimates based simple width equations adjusted for social position caps maximum cover, had the lowest error (RMSE = 14% cover) approaches all vegetation types. Random applied unadjusted only performed well drier types unable match high levels (>90%) often found productive Although statistical models somewhat greater precision than simpler crown-width summation 12%), accuracy comparable. The flexibility could make them more useful beyond our study area.

Predicting Forest Stand Height and Canopy Cover from LANDSAT and LIDAR data using decision trees

With 57,4 % of the national territory covered by forests[7], Slovenia is one of the most forested countries of the European Union. Forests represent the most important CO2 sink for Slovenia in the framework of the Kyoto protocol to the United Nations convention on climate change, predominantly due to accumulation of forest biomass. Only one quarter of the annually accumulated aboveground biomas...

Annual Detection of Forest Cover Loss Using Time Series Satellite Measurements of Percent Tree Cover

We introduce and test a new method to detect annual forest cover loss from time series estimates of percent tree cover. Our approach is founded on two realistic assumptions: (1) land cover disturbances are rare events over large geographic areas that occur within a short time frame; and (2) spatially discrete land cover disturbances are continuous processes over time. Applying statistically rig...

Determination of suitable sampling methods for study of canopy cover in the Oak Forest

To detection of suitable sampling method to study tree canopy cover in the northern Zagros forest, Baneeh region forest, Kurdistan province, and west of Iran was selected. 40 square sample plots one hectare (100×100 m) were selected and perfect inventoried. In every sample plot the position of tree, kind of species and two diameter of crown (m) were recorded. To study of canopy cover different ...
